When considering breast implants, there are so many factors to take into account that it can make the whole process very confusing and scary. Do you go with silicone or saline? Round or tear-drop shaped? Textured or smooth? The list goes on and on. Obviously having a sound understanding of the myriad options possible will help you feel much more confident in making the right decision.
But first I feel I should bust a few myths.
MYTH #1: SILICONE IMPLANTS ARE NOT SAFE
Silicone gel-filled implants are one of the most studied medical devices on the market today, with decades of research evaluating both their safety and effectiveness. Silicone-filled breast implant safety is supported by extensive preclinical testing. Silicone is a biocompatible substance that occurs naturally in small amounts in the body. In Australia, silicone-gel filled implants are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration and, in late 2006, were reapproved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Silicone is also used in antacids and some preservative.
MYTH #2: BREAST IMPLANTS FEEL UNNATURALLY HARD
Although breast implants may not be quite as supple as natural breasts, most women are very satisfied with results. Occasionally, excessive scar tissue is created by the body around the implant which results in the breasts feeling firmer. The technical term for this is capsular contracture. Sometimes, this can be massaged out or corrected with additional surgery.
MYTH #3: IMPLANTS CAN CAUSE BREAST CANCER AND OTHER DISEASES
At the time of writing, countless scientific studies have proven that women with silicone breast implants are not at increased risk of developing breast cancer or autoimmune diseases.
MYTH #4: YOU CANNOT BREASTFEED WITH BREAST IMPLANTS
Again, there is no medical evidence to suggest that implants interfere with breastfeeding or cause children to suffer from silicone poisoning. Breastfeeding tends to vary in all women, regardless of whether implants are present or not.
MYTH #5: IMPLANTS MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO DETECT BREAST CANCER
With or without breast implants, it is strongly recommended that all women regularly self-examine their breasts for early detection of any unusual lumps or bumps. This should also be accompanied by an annual check-up by a doctor. Mammographies are more difficult for women with breast implants but are well practised by many radiologists. Informing the radiologist of the presence of breast implants before the examination is highly recommended.
MYTH #6: BREAST AUGMENTATION IS PAINFUL SURGERY THAT REQUIRES A LOT OF TIME OFF WORK AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Everybody has their unique pain tolerance level and will require differing amounts of post-operative pain relief. A surgeon will take this into consideration when putting together an aftercare pack for the patient. The length of time it takes to recover from the surgery will also differ from person to person, although most patients are mobile and able to look after themselves within two days of their surgery. Most patients will return to work within five to seven days. Patients are also encouraged to commence a slow walking routine two days after surgery to assist with limiting swelling and are advised against vigorous exercise for about four to six weeks.
MYTH #7: BREAST AUGMENTATION SCARS ARE OBVIOUS
The implants are inserted through small incisions, which can be made in the crease under the breast, under the arm or around the nipple. The surgeon will recommend which of these options will be most suitable for each patient to try to minimise visible scarring. In most cases, the scarring will fade to a thin white line within six to 12 months after surgery and is quite unnoticeable unless you really look for it.
MYTH #8: EVERYONE CAN TELL WHEN A WOMAN HAS BREAST IMPLANTS
When a carefully planned breast augmentation is performed, it can give a very natural result that is difficult to detect. An experienced surgeon will take into consideration the patient’s desire as well as their height, weight, body shape and existing breast tissue before choosing the appropriate implant. Providing this is done, and the implant is placed correctly, patients can expect a very natural-looking result.
MYTH #9: IMPLANTS MAKE THE BREASTS SAG EARLIER
There are several factors that contribute to sagging breasts; gravity, weight and the breakdown of collagen and elastin tissue within the skin. Natural breasts of exactly the same weight will sag just as fast as an implant will. That’s why it’s important to wear a good quality, supportive and well-fitted bra. Do not assume breast implants mean that you don’t need a bra!
MYTH #10: BREAST IMPLANTS NEED TO BE REPLACED REGULARLY
Although implants do have a limited lifespan and may have to be removed and replaced at some point, most implants should last up to 25 years or more. However, the body will continue to age around the implants, meaning loss of natural breast tissue and collagen and elastin will increase the skin’s laxity, which may require the implants to be changed to fill the larger deficit.
