Remove clutter

Clean the walls first
It may seem counterintuitive to clean the walls that are going to be painted over. However, cleaning the walls before applying a fresh coat of paint ensures a clean and uniform finish. Often, substances that are left on the wall can affect the consistency of the paint, and consequently, the end result. In cleaning walls, use water and mild detergent. For tough stains and mildew, you can mix bleach with triosium phosphate. After cleaning the walls, use fans to dry the walls quicker.
Remove outlet covers
Like wall decor, outlet covers and switch plates should be removed before painting. Otherwise, there will be visible brush strokes or smudged paint on the outlet cover. Remove the outlet cover, switch plates, and use a childproof cover for the actual outlet. If you are going to paint the ceiling, remove the light fixtures and medallions.
Use masking tape
Use masking tape to cover mouldings, trims, baseboards and windowsills. This may be a time-consuming task, but this can ensure better results and prevent smeared paint.

Creating a staging area in the centre of the room or an area just outside of it offers a few benefits. First, you and the people who are going to help you out will know where all the materials are.
