Eyelid rejuvenation (blepharoplasty) is a procedure involving the removal of excess skin and/or fat tissue around the eye. When you consider the eye region as the main focal point of your face, it’s easy to understand how such a small, delicate procedure could make such a big difference. It comes in two variations: the upper bleph and lower bleph. Self-explanatory, right? Typically, these procedures are more common among people over the age of 35 and are equally popular with men and women. Not only can excess skin make you look a year older, it can, in some instances, actually interfere with your vision. Although the procedure only involves the removal of small amounts of tissue, the difference it can make to your face is incredible, providing, of course, the treatment is performed well. Upper or lower blephs can be performed individually, although it isn’t uncommon to perform both during the same procedure.
Procedure and Beyond
As with other surgical procedures, a final consultation takes place followed by the sedation of the patient. Local anaesthetic and mild sedation are commonly used, although a general anaesthetic may be used under a certain circumstance. The next step is to select appropriate incision point. When performing an upper bleph, incisions within the crease of the upper eyelid are typical, for lower blephs, the incision within the crease of the upper eyelid are typical. For lower blephs, the incision is just underneath the lower eyelashes, running parallel with the lower eyelid. On occasion, surgeons may opt to make an incision from inside the lower lid. This is known as a transconjunctival incision. The length of the incision will vary case by case. As a general rule, the surgeon will try to keep them as small and neat as possible. Once the excess skin and fat tissues are removed, very fine sutures are used to tighten the area. These will usually be removed within a week. The scars left behind will heal quite quickly, becoming fine inconspicuous lines within about a year.
Full recovery from a blepharoplasty can take up to four to six weeks. During this period, the patient will experience swelling and bruising. Some patients may experience blurry or double vision for a few days following their procedure. Generally, patients will be able to return to most normal light activities within a week, most of the swelling and bruising will disappear during the first 10 days or so. Until then, makeup and your favourite pair of sunglasses will help camouflage the area.
The results for a blepharoplasty are generally lasting, however, it will not stop your ageing. The skin around the eyes will continue to lose collagen and elasticity over the years, and a repeat procedure may be needed at a later date. The use of sunscreen, vitamin A and antioxidants will help achieve longer-lasting results.
The blepharoplasty procedure does carry some risks or complications, although rare. They include bleeding, asymmetry, scarring, and nerve damage. Blindness is also a potential risk, and although this is so rare, you probably have more chance of winning the lottery.
