One way of having a different sound of the same music is creating a mashup. Basically, a mashup is about blending two or more songs together to create a new one. But in creating a mashup, one needs to have a good ear that can determine what sound is right. Maybe you’re thinking that you need a high-end software and hardware, but if you’re just starting to make a mashup, you can use normal and simple DJ resources that allow you to have a good mixing experience.
Here are some useful tips that can help you in creating your first ever mashup.
1. Look for a tune where you can have an instrumental, acapella and a full vocal version.
This is the primary resources that you need in starting your first mashup. In choosing an audio, you should avoid using low-grade files. The advisable minimum bit rate for one audio file is 128 kbps.
2. Check the BPM of the acapella and instrumental version.
Don’t just sync the audios. To create a good sound, check the beats per minute (BPM) of the acapella version. To do this, check the BPM of the original instrumental version and the vocal version – the BPM of acapella version should be the same for those two versions. Then, you can manually set its BPM to that.
3. Drop the acapella over the instrumental to recreate the vocal version.
When you have the right BPM, start playing the instrumental on your DJ software then play the acapella at the right tempo as the full vocal version. If you have the same track as the full vocal version with separate vocal and instrumental, you can now start playing and remixing the track.
4. Replace the instrumental with a different song’s instrumental.
When you’ve got enough practice, get the acapella back to the beginning then load the new instrumental of the different song. Match the BPM of the two with the use of sync function. Then, start the instrumental playing wherever you think it’s right to do so. Use the eight counts to get the right tempo. You can use the nudge controls to get the exact tempo.
5. Trust your ears.
In creating mashups, music theory can be helpful but you shouldn’t be bound by these theories, remember: you should trust your ears. Even though you don’t have proper musical experience, you can still be able to know what tunes would fit together and what sounds don’t seem right.
