You've spent three weekends driving between used-car yards along Albany Highway and scrolling listings after the kids are in bed. You know exactly what you want: something a few years old with enough boot space for the Bunnings run, decent fuel economy for the Mitchell Freeway crawl, and a service history that doesn't make you nervous. You've done the hard part, or so it feels.
Then the salesperson asks how you're planning to pay, and you realise you haven't thought about it at all.
For most Perth buyers, the finance decision has a bigger effect on what the car actually costs than the haggling over the sticker price ever will. That's especially true with a used car, where the purchase price is lower but the wrong loan can quietly add thousands. Planning it properly before you fall for a particular vehicle puts you in control of the conversation, saves you money, and takes a surprising amount of stress out of the whole process. Here's how to do it.
Why Finance Deserves as Much Attention as the Car
Australia's corporate regulator has been looking closely at what people actually pay for car loans, and the findings are a wake-up call. According to ASIC's June 2026 review, which examined data from more than 350,000 loans across eight car finance providers, lender establishment fees ranged from $299 to $995, while separate distributor fees added anywhere from $912 to $2,500 on top. In one case, a customer paid over $9,000 in fees on a $49,162 loan, around 18% of the amount borrowed.
On a used car costing $20,000 or $25,000, fees like that represent an even larger slice of the total. They don't show up on the windscreen price. They show up in the contract, and they're far easier to avoid if you've done your homework before you're sitting across the desk.
Know Your Budget Before You Know Your Car
The most common mistake is working out the budget after choosing the car. Flip it around:
-
Look at your monthly income and fixed expenses honestly
-
Decide what repayment you can comfortably manage, leaving room for surprises
-
Factor in the running costs that come with any car: insurance, registration, fuel, servicing, and tyres
-
Set aside a small buffer for the repairs that come with an older vehicle
-
Set a total purchase price ceiling, not just a repayment figure
A repayment that looks manageable on paper can feel very different once insurance, fuel, and the occasional unexpected mechanic bill are added. Work backwards from what you can genuinely afford, then shop within that range.
Understand Your Finance Options
Perth buyers typically choose between a few routes, and each has trade-offs, particularly when the car isn't brand new:
-
Secured car loan from a bank or credit union. The car is security, which usually means a lower rate. Many lenders cap the vehicle's age at the end of the loan term, often around 10 to 12 years, so check that your chosen car qualifies.
-
Dealer-arranged finance. Convenient and fast, and often more flexible on older vehicles, but the dealer may earn a commission or fee, so compare the total cost carefully rather than just the headline rate.
-
Personal loan. Unsecured, so rates are higher, but useful for older cars or private sales that lenders won't secure against.
-
Paying cash or using savings. No interest at all, and with used cars often priced well below new ones, this is realistic for more buyers. Just weigh it against keeping an emergency buffer.
There's no single right answer. The best option depends on your income, credit history, the age of the car, how long you'll keep it, and whether you value speed or the lowest possible cost.
Get Pre-Approved Before You Shop
Pre-approval from a lender tells you exactly how much you can borrow and at what rate, before you've committed to anything. It changes the buying experience in three ways:
-
You shop with a firm ceiling, which stops you from being talked into a more expensive car
-
You can negotiate on price as a cash buyer would, because the finance is already settled
-
You have a benchmark to compare any dealer finance offer against
Pre-approval typically lasts 30 to 90 days, so line it up when you're serious about buying, not months in advance. Tell the lender you're buying used, since some have different terms for new and pre-owned vehicles.
Choose a Dealer Who Makes the Whole Process Straightforward
Where you buy matters as much as how you pay. A good used-car dealer will be transparent about pricing, upfront about the vehicle's history, happy for you to arrange your own finance, and clear about any fees if you use theirs. Browsing cars for sale perth buyers can compare gives you a sense of what's available in your budget before you set foot on a lot, which makes it much harder to be steered toward something you didn't plan for.
Carmart Perth is one local option that specialises in quality used vehicles, lists its stock openly online, and works with buyers whether they bring their own pre-approval or want help arranging finance on the spot. The key is choosing a dealer who treats the finance conversation as a service rather than a sales tactic, and who will put every cost in writing before you sign.
Read the Comparison Rate, Not Just the Interest Rate
Australian lenders are required to show a comparison rate alongside the advertised interest rate. The comparison rate folds in most fees and charges to give a truer picture of the loan's cost. Two loans with the same interest rate can have very different comparison rates once establishment and account-keeping fees are included. Always compare like with like, and ask for a full breakdown of every fee before committing.
Watch for the Extras
Finance contracts often come with optional add-ons that can inflate the cost significantly:
-
Loan protection or consumer credit insurance
-
Extended warranties bundled into the loan
-
Gap insurance
-
Tyre and rim cover
-
Paint and fabric protection
Some of these have value, and an extended warranty on a used car can be worth considering if the terms are fair. Many others don't. None should be added without your clear understanding and agreement. If something appears in the contract that you didn't ask for, question it.
Match the Loan to the Car's Life
A longer loan term lowers the monthly repayment but increases the total interest you pay, and with a used car there's an added risk: you could still be paying off a vehicle that's nearing the end of its reliable life. Consider:
-
Keeping the loan term shorter than the number of years you expect to own the car
-
Whether you can make extra repayments without penalty
-
What early payout fees apply if you sell or refinance
-
Whether a balloon payment at the end is something you can actually manage
A slightly higher repayment over a shorter term often works out far cheaper overall, and means the car is yours outright while it still has plenty of life left.
Conclusion
Finding the right used car in Perth is only half the job. Planning how you'll pay for it, ideally before you've fallen for a specific vehicle, is what determines whether the purchase is a smart one or an expensive lesson. Set a realistic budget that allows for running costs, understand which finance options suit an older vehicle, get pre-approved so you shop with confidence, and compare total cost through the comparison rate rather than the headline figure.
Choose a dealer who is open about pricing, history, and fees, and read every line before you sign. Do that, and the car you drive home will feel like a good decision for every year you own it.
