Water is the healthiest drink, but it’s not the only healthy drink. Know your other options for healthy drinks.
Pimped-Up Water
Mix fresh fruit and herbs in the bottom of a glass such as peaches, melon or berries with mint, basil, lemon verbena or even thyme, then top with ice and water.
Coconut Water
Unflavoured and unsweetened coconut water is another excellent option, for it is rich in electrolytes for a healthy heart.
Green Tea
Green tea contains a rich concentration of flavonoids and polyphenols, natural antioxidants that protect cells from cancer-causing substances and inhibit tumour growth by helping neutralise free radicals in the body. Its antioxidants may also guard against heart disease by relaxing blood vessels, inhibiting the formation of blood clots that trigger heart attacks and strokes. It also contains fluoride, which strengthens teeth; its flavonoids build up human bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and tooth decay.
Mint Tea
Mint tea eases cramps. It relaxes muscles, which combats stiffness and aches. It also aids in digestion by promoting the movement of food through the digestive tract.
Ginger Tea
Ginger is an excellent natural remedy for all tummy troubles. It’s a way to sooth an upset stomach, relieve motion sickness and pregnancy-related nausea, and ease digestion. Brew a cup of fresh ginger tea yourself by steeping one or two thin slices of fresh gingerroot in a cup of hot water. Spoon in a little honey if the brew turns out to be spicy.
Low-Fat Milk
Low-fat milk curbs cravings and helps protect against osteoporosis. It has the components of a healthy meal — carbohydrates, protein and a little fat — so you absorb it slowly and stay full longer. It stabilises blood sugar, making you less susceptible to cravings. It may also help your body stop storing fat. Milk is the ideal source of calcium and vitamin D, and low-fat milk, particularly, is a great source of protein and other essential micronutrients.
Soy Milk
Soy milk lowers risk of heart disease. It contains soluble fibre and soy protein, which lowers bad cholesterol levels and triglycerides, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Soy contains phytoestrogens, which may be linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Consult your doctor before drinking soy milk if you have a family history of the disease or have had it yourself.
Hot Chocolate
Chocolate increases the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which improves mood. It can also prevent heart disease, for cocoa is rich in polyphenols, antioxidants that protect cells against oxidative damage that can lower good cholesterol levels. If you're dealing with menstrual cramps, make a homemade hot chocolate with raw cocoa powder. If you need to sweeten it up a bit, try almond milk and honey or a little bit of maple syrup.
Fresh Fruit or Vegetable Juice
Tomato, cranberry, orange, pomegranate, beets, kale and lemon are the best options.
