You can avoid paint defects when you avoid using oil-based paints over water-based paints, or when you avoid painting in direct sunlight or when evening dew is likely to start. But what will you do if your paint has defects already? Here’s how.
Sagging paint
Wait until the paint is thoroughly dry, then sand out all runs and sags, and recoat the paint — bearing in mind what caused the problem in the first place.
Paint streaks or blotches
Recoating is necessary.
Paint not drying properly
Remove as much of the sticky paint as possible, and start again with proper preparation, cleaning materials and brushes.
Paint drying too fast
The surface needs thorough sanding. When you repaint, try to add a little extra solvent or wait for a cooler time of the day. Avoid using too little paint or stretching the paint too far.
Paint can’t hide the underlying surface
Apply another coat. Red is notorious for not covering paint well.
Paint not showing gloss
This defect can be solved by spot sealing the dull areas and recoating. If it’s due to weather conditions, the surface may actually come well after a month or two.
Flaking, cracking and scaling
Strip back the paint totally to the raw wood and prime it before applying a new paint system.
Peeling paint
Identify the cause before you strip the paint and do resurfacing.
Orange Peeling
Strip or sand back the paint surface to a smooth sound surface. If the bottom coat is too soft, do total stripping of the paint surface.
Paint drawing back into drops
Clean the surface thoroughly or, in the case of silicones, replace it with a paintable silicone. You can also wait until weathering allows the paint to key to the surface (this can take over a year).
Blistering paint
Identify what caused it, sand the surface smooth, then repaint. Use an all-purpose sealer first on the area where incompatible paint was used. Keep the area dry while the paint is curing, and shade it from strong sunlight.
Paint fading early
Use the correct paint for the job. Use correct sealer on surfaces which are difficult to paint.
Not all paints are compatible with each other. In many cases, it’s important to identify what paint is already on the surface.
