The best part is that you can even install artificial grass on your own. With sufficient DIY skills, you can accomplish the task in just one day. Here are some tips to follow:
Get the right measurement so you buy enough artificial turf.
You will want to measure both the width and the depth. Some pre-cut artificial grass can come in 15 feet wide (4.572 metres).
Prep the area you’re going to cover.
Remove the surface of any substance, from weeds and existing grass to rocks and other vegetation. This is generally done at a depth of 3 to 4 inches.
Next, add a layer of fabric to prevent weed from growing through the artificial turf’s drainage holes. Secure the fabric with spikes. Then spread a base lift of 3 inches, with crushed stone; then grade it as smoothly as you can using the flat side of the rake. Now mist—not wet—the grade and then compact the surface, brushing out any ridges.
Clean the area before rolling out your artificial turf.
Let the artificial turf lay on the flat surface. Then try to trim the extra black edge with a carpet cutter.
Now you’re ready to install the artificial grass.
Roll out sections of the turf on the compacted base, carefully positioning it to take out the wrinkles and keeping it smooth. This is crucial that you get it right because correct placemen prevents cuts and waste. The grain needs to face in the same direction.
A quick tip: try to face the grain toward the viewer; if it’s in the front yard, the grain should go toward the street, if it’s in the back yard, it should go toward the house.
When joining strips, have the pile run in the same direction. Fold back the edges and position the tape with the smooth side down; this will make the edges of the grass meet down the centre of the tape.
Make adjustments before you make the installation final with adhesive and spikes. Perfect placement prevents inconsistency with the colour or tone and level.
Once everything is in proper place, secure the outer edge with spikes or wooden pegs. Place the infill material on top of the turf; the infill protects the blades and the backing from weathering, so don’t skip this step. Use an infill rake of a stiff broom to get the blades upright
And voila! You’re done installing your artificial grass.
