Most people who live in Australia have an overseas trip to go on. It's not just about booking flights, accommodation and insurance. They'll also want mobile data at their destination — ideally without a large roaming bill waiting when they get home, or a queue at an airport SIM kiosk. There are many options for mobile data while you're abroad. So if you plan ahead you can save yourself money and time when you get there.
Why Staying Connected Matters More When You Travel Overseas
Nowadays we use so many apps when traveling. Apps that give directions to your hotel, translate a menu at a restaurant, or help you navigate an unfamiliar city all save time once you land. Having access to these apps and a good connection will save you time if you're traveling to an area that you're not familiar with. You may have to spend more time looking for what you need if you don't have these apps available to you.
Staying in touch with family is another consideration. Depending on what time zone you're visiting, it could be hard to communicate. You may want to let your family know that you got there safely or talk to them at a certain time. Many people also use apps to manage their flights and hotel bookings. So a reliable connection matters for accessing e-tickets and banking apps while you're away.
Comparing Your Options: Roaming, a Local SIM, and eSIM Apps
Once you know you'll need connectivity, the next question is which type of connection suits the trip. There are three types that most Australians choose from.
International Roaming
Using an existing provider to turn on roaming will be the easiest method as you won't need to purchase any additional sim cards or change your number. It works the same way it does back home. Just make sure you have a data pack to help avoid exorbitant roaming rates. You could end up paying quite a bit if you rely on roaming for maps or video calls throughout the day.
A Local or International SIM Card
Another option is to buy a local sim card when you arrive or purchase an international sim card before you leave. This can be cheaper and provide you with more data while in that area. However, this does require that your phone is unlocked, and you may have to visit a shop before you can connect.
eSIM Apps
If you don't want to pay high roaming rates or stand in line at the airport to get your SIM card, you can look into eSIMs. They let you buy a data pack to use once you land, while your current Australian number stays active for calls and texts. There are many apps out there that offer this service. eSIM Plus is one example of this kind of app, alongside several others available through app stores, each with a slightly different approach to activation and plan management.
What Australian Travellers Should Check Before Choosing a Plan
Whichever direction you lean, a few things are worth checking before you commit to a plan:
-
Device compatibility — most newer phones sold in Australia support eSIM, but it's worth confirming your handset isn't locked to a particular carrier.
-
Data allowance — match the plan to how you'll actually use your phone, not just to the number of days you'll be away.
-
Validity period — some plans run for a fixed number of days from activation rather than set calendar dates, so check this lines up with your itinerary.
-
Coverage — confirm the plan actually covers the specific country or region on your itinerary, rather than a broader zone that only partly applies.
-
A backup option — it's worth keeping a fallback in mind, whether that's roaming switched on as a backup or a second SIM, in case your main plan runs into trouble.
Smart Habits for Staying Safe While Connected Abroad
Staying connected overseas is also a good moment to think about digital privacy while travelling:
-
Download travel apps, including any eSIM app, only from official app stores.
-
Treat your eSIM activation QR code the way you'd treat a physical SIM card or a password — don't share it.
-
Be cautious with public Wi-Fi in hotels and airports, and avoid logging into banking apps on unsecured networks where possible.
-
Take a moment to check the privacy policy of any new travel app before handing over personal details.
The Future of Travel Connectivity for Australians
As eSIM support expands to more tablets and wearables, activation keeps getting easier. It's also becoming more common to see travel apps let you purchase connectivity directly when booking flights or other transport. Another plus is that you won't be handing out as many plastic sim cards at an airport, which can have a positive impact on our environment if many people switch.
Final Thoughts
Just like travel insurance or changing money it's another thing to keep in mind when traveling abroad. You may want to just stick with roaming or purchase a local sim card, depending on where you're going and how much data you'll need. If convenience is something you enjoy then using an app to purchase travel sim may be worth considering. Always do your research before taking off and you'll spend less time worrying about connectivity once you arrive.
