What Is Multi-Currency Checkout and When to Use It
Multi-currency checkout lets customers see and pay in their own currency instead of the domestic currency of an e-shop. A visitor from Singapore will see the checkout just as they would when buying from a local company, but the convenience is mirrored for the seller because they'll receive settlement in their home currency too. It's essentially pricing in the shopper's currency from first click to final payment, so if a visitor is drawn to your site by an enticing price, that's exactly the price that they'll see and pay on the webshop.
How It Differs From Currency Conversion
So how does it differ from currency conversion? When you price in your own currency, the conversion happens after the purchase, meaning that the shopper's card issuer will add a percentage to the transaction as a conversion fee. Often, these fees are unclear, and most shoppers are unaware of the conversion percentage without looking it up and confirming.
The buyer often only knows how much was added when they get the bank statement a few days later. Nothing at the point of sale is informing them of what exactly they'll pay, introducing doubt and reluctance to complete the checkout process. When you’re pricing in the shopper's currency instead, it removes this significant barrier in international e-commerce.
Who Benefits Most
Some businesses have more use for multi-currency checkout than others. So let's explore which types of businesses would benefit the most from multi-currency checkout.
Retailers Near Tourist Hubs
Retailers near tourist hubs like the following:
-
Souvenir shops
-
Galleries
-
Fashion boutiques
-
Specialty sellers
These businesses are likely to benefit because they see a lot of tourists who are comfortable paying in foreign currencies as long as the price is made clear. In tourist hotspots, local search visibility is, as expected, important, but if the price isn't clear, you'll lose sales from customers despite the number of clicks you're getting.
Online Boutiques
Online-only boutiques can also benefit from these kinds of transactions. If you ship overseas, showing the price and letting shoppers buy in their own currency makes people more comfortable with the transaction, no matter what's going on in the e-shop's backend. Paying in their own currency creates a sense of familiarity, comfort, and security, which is important if you're selling higher-priced items where people are most cautious about surprise bank charges.
Accommodation, Tours, and Experiences
Another area where these services are used is in the tourist accommodation, tours, and experience sector, where travelers will often book weeks ahead and compare different options before they head out on the trip. The service makes these businesses more attractive and easier for potential buyers to compare.
Downsides and Fees to Consider
So what are the downsides? Multi-currency checkout is not free of problems. Providers generally earn money on the currency conversion itself, either through a margin built into the exchange rate or through commissions shared with you. So before setting it up, ask exactly how the rate is set, how often it updates, and what you will receive per transaction.
Shoppers' banks can still play a role. Some cards charge their own foreign transaction fees, which can add 1–3% to each purchase, but that depends on the card and associated bank, so you'll need to be cautious about promising no fees to tourists who might be hit with additional charges on their end.
