Canberra Martial Arts actually started months before we opened in January 2011, when our Chief Instructor Tom Adam and his wife were discussing where to raise their (then) 2 young children. Tom had recently received his 4th Dan Black Belt in Hapkido and put up a crappy website when they chose Canberra to live.
On January 23rd 2011, Tom started the club with 3 members in a small room rented at the Phillip Pool (4m x 5m of rubber mats). Over the years the club has grown, evolved and changed and in October 2017 we settled into our current home at 10 Townshend Street. Compared to our first club everything is bigger. Mat 1 has 9m x 17m of 3cm rubber mats, Mat 2 has 9m x 7m of 2cm rubber mats. The Dojang (club) now teaches 4 different styles of martial arts as well as a Martial Arts Fit program.
Tom has since been promoted to 5th Dan Black Belt in Hapkido, is working towards his 2nd Dan Black Belt in Kummooyeh Kumdo (Korean Sword) and his family has grown to 3 children. In 2018 we begin the year with over 350 members across the 4 martial arts and with a full-time chief instructor the Dojang is growing an amazing culture of people who focus on FUN, SAFE and AMAZING MARTIAL ARTS.
