COURTNEY TURF

Charles Courtney, believe or not, a resident of the Lane Cove National Park, began bringing lawn sod to Sydneys exclusive North Shore prior to 1920. He used a spade, and a horse and dray. He didn’t have to travel far for naturally occurring supplies of buffalo turf.

But by the 1950’s, his son, Chicka, had to travel further afield and the grasses naturally occurring were couch ,and a little later, kikuyu.
In the 1960’s, having purchased land at Pitt Town, these were the grasses that were propagated. Lawn (or Turf) farming, an entirely radical idea at the time.

During the late eighties, Courtneys introduced and began growing soft leaf buffalo to the Sydney market. The ninety’s brought an influx of these grasses (often from the USA) and were often eagerly sought by some growers. Courtney’s, however, were not convinced.

Thru their long term experience and association in turf, they knew the best buffalos occurred naturally in the Hunter Valley. When approached by Brent Redman, an established Hunter Valley turf grower, with an as yet unnamed variety of soft leaf buffalo, their patience was rewarded. So impressive was this variety of lawn, the decision was made to grow no other.
