For over 150 years, the site of the East Melbourne General Store has been servicing its local community. In many ways, it remains in a time warp. It was first built as The Emerson Dairy in 1862. Mrs Emerson later added groceries and traded until 1910. It has remained a grocery store ever since, with the current building erected on the site in 1978. Since then not much has changed. We’re still selling ’70’s iced doughnuts, hot pies and milkshakes with an ‘old fashioned’ level of service and kindness.

The former owners, Norm & Anna Daher, maintained the tradition for 25 years – passing the baton to current owner-operator, Lisette Malatesta in mid-2015. As the traditional Melbourne milk bar faces extinction, Lisette continues the shop’s role in her community, whilst expanding the product range and style of service to cater for the current century.
