Khuu Thi Gioi is also affectionately known as Mrs Tran by many of her customers. These customers have been frequenting the little corner shop in Palmerston Street, Perth, since the early 80s, being one of the very first Asian gourmet shops of its kind to open in Perth.

Born in the 1940s in Vĩnh Châu in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, Mrs Tran, along with her husband Tan Tran, fled Vietnam to Australia with eight of their ten children as boat people in 1978. Of the eight children, only six came to Australia after spending six months in a refugee camp.

Over the years they managed to bring all of their children with their families to Perth. Mrs Tran, the matriarch of the Tran family, has raised 10 children, 28 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren!

More often than not, the Palmerston Street shop’s kitchen would have something cooking away on the stove. The Tran family would often come to the shop and feast on dishes that had been created by the women of the Tran family. The simple act of sharing a meal with family has been passed down to each generation, whenever there is a family gathering, food is alway a must!
