Albury Wodonga has always been a place that brings people together. For the Wiradjuri people, the original inhabitants of the area, Albury Wodonga’s location was an important river crossing and tribal meeting place.

For later history, journey to Hovell Tree Park at the western end of Hume Street in Albury, to visit the tree inscribed by the explorer William Hovell in 1824 . Here the explorers Hume and Hovell found a safe place to cross the Murray so they could continue their journey of discovery south to Melbourne.

Mix outdoor activity with your history fix: Try pedalling the old railway line on the High Country Rail Trail and call into the Bonegilla Migrant Experience, where you can hear first-hand the intriguing stories of the Bonegilla migrants.

If you are visiting for a few days, discover an impressive collection at the Army Museum (24 hours’ notice required) including war vehicles, prisoner of war and ordinance displays as well as the Turkish 75mm Krupp Field Gun captured by the 11th Australian Light Horse Regiment and the 4th Machine Gun Squadron during fighting at Semakh in 1918.
