I’m no chef but I do love Balinese food and a fondness for fooling around in the kitchen prompted me to add a cooking class to my Bali Vacay. There was just one problem, I was finding it a challenge to leave the pool so imagine my delight at discovering Villa Coco’s Poolside Cooking Class! Armed with the idea of mastering the art of Balinese cuisine with a drink in hand and in cooee of a cool pool, I booked my lunchtime for Balinese cooking class for the following day.

There was no need to head to the dawn markets as all of the ingredients were portioned and ready for us to chop, chop, chop but with everyone in the group armed with kitchen cleavers we donned our very own Villa Coco aprons and made fast work of the fresh herbs. Soon there was a mound of aromatic spice paste ready to go. All are encouraged to participate, and you can choose to what extent you get your hands dirty but with such a friendly team, it’s no wonder the whole class wanted a piece of the action.

Pretty soon there were dishes of deliciousness appearing all around us from corn fritters, sambals and satay to fresh bean salads and chicken curry and let’s not forget about those banana fritters with homemade caramel sauce for a dessert to die for! While the Villa Coco team put some finishing touches to the dishes and completed the process of plating up, we migrated to our stunning poolside dining setting, proceeded to order another cocktail (mocktails for the kids) and craft our very own floral crowns from local flora. Each table setting is adorned with your very own take-home apron and recipe book detailing how to recreate the dishes you make on the day.
