Family Activities for a Trip to the Grand Canyon

Considered by many to be one of the world's great wonders, the Grand Canyon in Arizona provides a quiet getaway for a family vacation. Both the North and South rims provide panoramic views of the canyon, although most accommodations and attractions are located on the South Rim. The National Park Service and other organizations offer several activities that are suitable for all ages. Ranger Programs The NPS offers numerous ranger programs at the park throughout the year. Families can listen to park rangers discuss the history of the canyon and take a walk down a trail to learn about the local flora and fauna. One program allows families to join a ranger on a walk at the Tusayan Museum to see the remains and hear about the history of an ancient Pueblo village. Parents must accompany their children on all of the ranger-led programs. Grand Canyon Field Institute The Grand Canyon Field Institute offers family classes for a fee. The "Lodging & Learning" class, for example, provides families with two days of exploring the Grand Canyon, both above and below the rim. Families view ancient Indian ruins, old railroads, fossils and more while listening to rangers discuss the local ecology and human history. The institute provides lodging at the Yavapai West Lodge or Maswik South Lodge and three daily meals during the class. Kolb Studio This unique round building on the east side of the South Rim was the home and office of the Kolb brothers, who once made their living photographing and filming the Grand Canyon. This Victorian-era building perched on the edge of the canyon has been restored and families can view art exhibits here. The building also provides magnificent views of the eastern section of the canyon and is a great place for a family photo opportunity. The studio opens daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Rim Trail Hike Families can walk the rim trail near the South Rim Visitor Center to find ideal views of the canyon. Shuttle buses run frequently along this path and will carry you back to the visitor center when you are ready. The trail is flat and much of it is paved, making it child-friendly and stroller-accessible. The Rim Trail provides spectacular views of the inner canyon and Colorado River. Source: USA Today
