Most people choose their glass bongs on looks alone, then replace the piece within six months. We have sold this gear for 40+ years and collected over 7,000 reviews. This mistake is committed right before our eyes every week.
There are four criteria that determine the longevity of any part: wall thickness, joint diameter, filtration, and the place where you purchase the parts from. Here’s how to inspect all four.
Glass thickness is the thing most buyers ignore
Wall thickness is measured in millimetres, and it decides whether your piece survives a knock against the sink. Anything under 3mm is thin. It photographs the same as thicker glass online. It also chips at the mouthpiece and cracks near the joint far sooner.
5mm glass costs more and lasts years longer. In our experience, heavier 5mm pieces come back on breakage claims at a fraction of the rate of budget tubes.
Borosilicate is the material worth paying for. It handles heat changes, so a hot water rinse will not stress the glass the way it does cheaper soda-lime.
Joint size decides what fits later
Joint size is where the downstem and cone piece meet the body of the bong. Get it wrong and nothing you buy afterwards will fit.
Australian retailers mostly stock 14mm and 18mm joints. The 14mm suits smaller pieces and pulls a little easier. The 18mm moves more air and suits taller tubes.
Check yours before ordering spares. A 14mm cone piece drops straight through an 18mm joint, and there is no adaptor in the box.
This is the most common return we handle. People measure the outside of the stem instead of the ground joint, then order the wrong size twice. Also look at whether the downstem is removable. Removable stems can be cleaned properly, while fixed ones trap resin where no brush reaches.
How much filtration do you actually need?
Percolators break smoke into smaller bubbles, which cools it on the way up. More percs mean a softer hit and more drag on the pull. A single diffused downstem is enough for most people. It is easier to clean and does not choke the airflow.
Honeycomb and tree percs feel noticeably smoother. They also clog fast with finely ground material. Plan on cleaning every three sessions, not every fortnight.
If you have never owned one, start simple. Our percolator bong range is worth a look once you know you will keep up with the maintenance.
Match the shape to where you will actually use it
Shape is not just a style choice. It changes stability, how fast the chamber clears, and how harsh the smoke feels.
Wide-based beaker bongs rarely tip, which makes them the sensible pick for a coffee table. Straight tubes clear faster but topple more.

The smoking shop test: five minutes before you check out
Most complaints we hear about glass bongs have nothing to do with the glass. They start when something goes wrong and the seller goes quiet. Buy from a retailer holding stock in Australia. Overseas orders sit in customs, arrive chipped, and leave you chasing a refund across time zones.
Ask what happens when glass turns up broken. We ship from our Australian warehouse and replace breakages. That policy is a large part of why our reviews read the way they do.
Read the delivery and returns terms before checkout rather than after. One honest warning. A $35 tube from a decent brand often outlasts a $120 piece with thin walls and a flashy perc.
Pay for thickness first and features second. Stock up on spare cone pieces too, because those go missing long before the glass does.
In Short
Thickness, joint size and sensible filtration beat good looks every time. Put your money where it’s meant to go, and deal with a seller who guarantees replacement of the product should it break. Check out our entire line of glass bongs available for discreet shipping from our Australian stock.
Frequently asked questions
1. What glass thickness should I look for in a bong?
Aim for 5mm borosilicate if you smoke daily. 3mm is fine for occasional or travel use. Below 3mm, expect chipping around the mouthpiece within months.
2. What joint size do most Australian glass bongs use?
14mm and 18mm are the two common standards. Check your listing before buying a replacement downstem or cone piece, because the two sizes are not interchangeable.
3. Are percolator bongs worth the extra money?
They cool smoke noticeably better than a plain downstem. The trade-off is upkeep, since extra chambers trap resin quickly and need cleaning every few sessions.
