Taking perfect wedding family photos is more complicated and challenging than most people realise. The wedding photographers' excellent photography skills are just one aspect of it. They also must spend time understanding your wedding day timeline, wedding locations, and family dynamics. It's my personal preference to take the wedding family photographs immediately after the wedding ceremony. Keep your congratulations part of the wedding simple and short, so that your guests and family members can have a bit of mingling time. Also, you should take into consideration that some people may leave the group to use the restroom or get a drink, so your photographer has to take a group photo without them or waste time waiting for them to return. Many professional wedding photographers will schedule family photos immediately after the ceremony, so people may consider it to be the default time to do so. In addition to planning a family photo shoot at other times, I've seen some brides arrange for family portraits before the reception begins, with a flowery backdrop for their families and the guests to know about it. In some cultures, including Macedonian, Lebanese, Greek, and Italian, the bride and groom invite their parents, relatives, and friends to the pre-wedding part. Taking family photos during the getting-ready stage is also an excellent opportunity. I believe having family photo sessions after the reception introduction is not a good idea. Early in my photography career, I learned a valuable lesson about photographing weddings. The couple wanted family photos taken during the reception, as the wedding timeline was a bit too tight in the afternoon. Having not been brave or confident enough to say 'Stop!' I experienced the messiest family photo session of my career. It is nearly impossible to photograph every member of the group. Some of the people got really drunk, some needed to use the toilet, and some went out to take a smoke. There were people missing from some of the photos, and I really want to share this lesson with future couples and other wedding photographers. So, it is important to choose the right wedding family photograph time to get perfect photos.

Where should you organise your wedding family photo session?

We know that capturing wedding family photos is important, but where to capture them is also important. Taking the guests and family members outdoors when the weather allows may help utilize the natural light, therefore producing more natural photos. I prefer to stay in the shade outside the church when photographing. This way, I can enhance my pictures with soft natural light. Senior people may attend your wedding, so avoid walking too far away from the ceremony place. When it rains a bit, try to stay indoors to take family photos. It would be great if you could ask your guests to help your photographer clear away some furniture so that he can have a clean background and more space for taking excellent family photos. It is my counsel that you refrain from venturing onto the grass the day after it has rained, even if the rain has ceased. Ladies who are attending the ceremony, particularly the bride, are likely to wear high-heeled shoes, and they may become mired. So keep the ladies elegant and avoid the risk of them falling down.

Make sure there is lighting and brightness!

Lighting is an important consideration when planning family photos, just as it is for all the photos taken on your wedding day. In case you are worried about not having enough natural light, for example if you are getting married in the winter. Your photographer can take family photographs with a flash during the reception. When deciding on a location for family photos, lighting should be prioritized over background choice. The beauty of the mountain range behind your relatives' does not matter if everyone is squinting into the sun, everyone will look terrible. Standing in the blazing heat while the photographer gets his shot is not the only thing nobody likes. You do not want to make your grandmother uncomfortable nor do you desire to have to listen to your uncle complain. Take family photos in shaded areas, because it will benefit both you and your relatives.

What Is the Process for Taking Family Photos?

During my wedding photography experience, I believe that a typical wedding family photo session lasts between 30 to 45 minutes, whether it's taken immediately after the wedding ceremony, before the reception introduction, or at some other point on the wedding day. An extravagant wedding with numerous guests coming from out of state and out of the country may prompt you to prefer capturing this moment in photos. You may need to give some extra time in this scenario.
