Most Halloween candy is built the same way: corn syrup for sweetness, artificial dye for color, gelatin because it's cheap.
Swedish candy skips a lot of that, real cane sugar instead of syrup, natural coloring, and plenty of pieces made without gelatin at all. Same trick-or-treat bowl, different ingredient list.
What's in the average trick-or-treat bowl
Grab any bag of fun-size candy off a shelf and check the label. High fructose corn syrup shows up in most of it, it's the cheapest way to sweeten something at scale. Artificial dyes do the color work, Red 40, Yellow 5, the ones that show up in bright block letters on the ingredient panel. And most American gummy candy uses gelatin as its base, an animal byproduct that vegetarians, some religious diets, and plenty of parents specifically avoid.
None of this makes the candy dangerous. It's Halloween candy, not a health food. But it does mean most of what ends up in a trick-or-treat bowl is built around the cheapest version of sweet, not the best one.
Where Swedish candy is different
Swedish pick-and-mix runs on a different formula. Real cane sugar instead of corn syrup. Fruit juice and natural extracts doing the color and flavor work instead of dye. And a lot of it, though not all of it, skips gelatin entirely.
BUBS candy, the brand behind most of what's on the wall, makes several pieces without gelatin. Worth checking the specific bag though, not every shape uses the same recipe, some still include it. That's true of most candy brands, ours included, so read the label rather than assume the whole bin qualifies.
A quick label check anyone can do
- Check the first ingredient. If it's corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup, that's most of what's in the bag.
- Look for gelatin by name if it matters to your family. It's usually listed plainly, not hidden.
- Check the color source. Natural coloring says so, beet juice, turmeric, not just a dye number like Red 40.
Handing out something people remember
A bowl of the same fun-size bars every house on the block hands out doesn't stick with anyone. Swedish pick-and-mix does, mostly because most kids haven't seen it before. Sour, salty, and gummy shapes that don't look like anything from the usual candy aisle.
Both stores carry it, Hull and Beacon Hill, and it ships nationwide if a Halloween order needs to land before the 31st. Bulk pick-and-mix bags work well at the door, no need to sort individual pieces by hand.
