In simpler terms, this energy embarks on an upward ascent along the spine, embracing the brain, and then undertakes a graceful descent down the body's front.
This practice intricately balances the cool yin and the warm yang energies, orchestrating a harmonious fusion that in turn nurtures the etheric body and activates the psychic centres. The circulation of this creative energy catalyses the awakening of spiritual perception, ushering in a profound sense of completeness and unity. The ultimate objective of this practice is to achieve inner balance, mental clarity, and to initiate your meditation by directing your focus towards the Lower Tan Tien (as illustrated in the diagram below). Immerse yourself in this focal point until your awareness becomes attuned to that precise region. If you find it beneficial, closing your eyes can facilitate a heightened ability to concentrate. The Tan Tien assumes the role of a primary laboratory and serves as the foundational epicentre for inner alchemical practices. Nestled within the navel region, it holds the pivotal position for the metamorphosis, containment, and assimilation of qi energies. This intricate space facilitates the profound transformation, storage, and reception of vital life force energies.
Here's how to practise the Microcosmic Orbit
1. The most optimal practice entails either a seated or standing posture, aligning with the Taoist belief that humans serve as a vital bridge between the realms of heaven – extending beyond physical reality – and the earthly plane of existence. 2. When standing, it's recommended to embrace a relaxed stance in the knees, permitting a gentle bend. Gently draw your tailbone backward as you extend your chest and solar plexus forward. Ensure your spinal column is impeccably aligned by elongating and stretching it. Amidst these physical postures, perhaps the paramount aspect is to immerse yourself in a state of relaxation, accompanied by the tender glow of a gentle smile. It's worth noting that maintaining a serene expression is pivotal; any inadvertent frowning is believed to constrict the flow of energy at the brow, potentially entwining us in the tumultuous currents of our mental challenges. 3. Position your tongue against the roof of your mouth, forming the vital Qi Line connection—a practice reminiscent of how babies innately adopt this positioning within the womb. 4. With your eyes gently closed, shift your focus toward your Navel (as indicated by point 1 in the provided image). Engage with this specific point until tranquillity envelops you and your breathing attains a steady rhythm. 5. From this point, the journey advances by transitioning the focal point across the trajectory outlined in the diagram. Traverse from the initial starting point at the navel, progressing through each designated juncture, cascading downwards and then ascending through the sequence of acupuncture points that adorn the spine. This path continues beyond, enveloping the crown of the head, only to descend once more, culminating in a return to the initial starting point along the anterior aspect of the body. 6. A pivotal technique involves harnessing the inhalation to guide the qi's ascent along the spine, while employing the exhalation to facilitate its graceful descent akin to a flowing watercourse, tracing its path down the anterior facet of the body. 7. Furthermore, directing special attention to the 'gate' positioned at the back of the neck proves to be advantageous. This ensures that an unbroken posture is maintained, devoid of any hindrance to the qi's flow. Visualising an invisible string extending from the back of your crown, gently tugging your head upwards, can serve as a beneficial visualisation to encourage this desired alignment.
