Key Insights
- NSW Health has confirmed influenza is at HIGH activity across New South Wales as of August 2026 — the highest activity level in their classification system — with influenza B accounting for a significant proportion of notifications
- Influenza A and B viruses can survive on hard surfaces including desks, keyboards, door handles, and tap fixtures for up to 24 hours — standard office cleaning without disinfection does not eliminate them
- The most missed infection-control points in Sydney office cleans are EFTPOS terminals, shared keyboards, lift buttons, tea room appliances, and photocopier touch screens — surfaces touched by multiple people throughout the day
- Under Safe Work Australia guidance, employers have a duty of care to maintain a safe working environment — this includes ensuring cleaning protocols protect against known outbreak pathogens
- NDIS providers operating from office or clinical environments face an additional compliance layer — NDIS Practice Standards require demonstrable infection control procedures, especially when participants are present in facilities
- Most commercial office cleaners in Western Sydney do not carry TGA-registered disinfectants as standard — this matters for any facility with a medical, allied health, or NDIS function
- Facilities that increase cleaning frequency during outbreak periods reduce influenza transmission risk — the strongest evidence supports daily disinfection of high-touch surfaces during flu season
TL;DR
NSW influenza is at high activity in August 2026. For Sydney offices, medical facilities, and NDIS environments, standard cleaning is not enough — infection control requires TGA-registered disinfectants on high-touch surfaces daily, and documented protocols for compliance. Mercy Property Care provides commercial cleaning with infection control protocols across Western Sydney, including Parramatta, Blacktown, Penrith, and the Hills District, with after-hours scheduling and written service records for NDIS and healthcare compliance.
Why flu season changes what your Sydney office actually needs from a cleaner
Right now, in August 2026, your office carries a measurable infection risk that it did not have three months ago.
NSW Health's respiratory surveillance confirms influenza is at its highest activity classification across New South Wales. That means the same hands that touched a handrail on the train this morning, shook hands with a client, pressed the lift button, and pulled open the kitchen fridge have been depositing live virus on surfaces across your workplace all day.
Standard office cleaning — vacuuming, bin emptying, mopping — does not address this. Influenza viruses survive on hard non-porous surfaces like desks, keyboards, door handles, and shared screens for up to 24 hours. A cleaner who wipes a surface with a general-purpose product that has no listed kill time for influenza has not reduced the viral load on that surface in any meaningful way.
This is the difference between cleaning and infection control — and right now, for most Sydney offices, the gap between the two is where absenteeism, sick days, and obligation risk lives.
Mercy Property Care's office cleaning infection control service across Western Sydney uses TGA-registered disinfectants with documented dwell times on all high-touch surfaces as standard during outbreak periods — not as an upgrade, but as a baseline.
What surfaces in a Sydney office actually spread influenza — and are you cleaning them?
The surfaces most people think of cleaning are floors and benches. The surfaces that spread influenza are the ones touched most often by the most people.
The highest-risk surfaces in a Sydney office right now:
- Door handles and push plates — touched by every person entering and leaving, rarely disinfected between cleans
- Shared keyboards and mice — computer equipment in meeting rooms, reception desks, or training areas
- Lift call buttons — touched hundreds of times a day by people from every floor
- Kitchen and tea room appliances — kettle handles, microwave door buttons, fridge handles, coffee machine touch pads
- Photocopier and printer screens — shared by multiple staff throughout the day
- EFTPOS terminals and reception counters — for businesses with client foot traffic
- Tap handles in bathrooms — touched before and after handwashing
- Meeting room chairs and table surfaces — particularly armrests and the edges where hands rest
A standard commercial cleaning schedule addresses floors, bins, and general surface wiping. It rarely reaches most of the items on this list with an appropriate disinfectant at the right concentration and dwell time.
For Sydney businesses in Parramatta, Blacktown, Penrith, and the Hills District dealing with increased staff absenteeism right now, adding a professional commercial cleaning service with documented infection control protocols is the most direct lever they have.
What does infection control cleaning actually require — and who sets the standard?
Infection control cleaning in a commercial setting is governed by several overlapping Australian standards and guidelines:
Safe Work Australia requires employers to identify hazards (including biological hazards like active influenza outbreaks) and implement reasonably practicable controls. An employer who has been notified of a flu outbreak in their workplace but has not adjusted cleaning protocols has identified a hazard and taken no action — a clear compliance gap.
NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council) infection control guidelines specify documented cleaning protocols, product selection (TGA-registered disinfectants), and surface-specific dwell times for outbreak conditions. These apply directly to medical, allied health, and any facility handling vulnerable populations.
NDIS Practice Standards require that registered NDIS providers implement and document infection prevention and control procedures. This includes any office environment where participants receive services or where staff prepare to deliver services in participants' homes. Cleaning records form part of an auditable compliance trail.
What this means in practice for Sydney facilities:

The key point: the compliance standard varies by facility type, but none of them are satisfied by standard floor-and-bin cleaning during an active flu season.
For NDIS providers specifically, documented proof of cleaning — written service records with product names, application areas, and dates — is not optional. It is an auditable requirement. Mercy Property Care provides written service records after every clean as standard.
What should a flu-season office cleaning schedule actually look like in Sydney?
During an active outbreak period like the current August 2026 flu season, most Sydney offices need to adjust their cleaning frequency and scope — not just continue what they were doing in June.
Recommended schedule for a standard 10–50 person Sydney office during flu season:
Daily (before staff arrive or after hours):
- Disinfect all door handles and push plates
- Disinfect shared kitchen appliances, tap handles, and fridge doors
- Disinfect any shared screens, keyboards, and EFTPOS terminals
- Clean and disinfect all bathroom surfaces including taps
- Empty bins and replace liners
3× per week:
- Full vacuum and mop of all floor areas
- Wipe all desk surfaces with a general-purpose cleaner
- Clean glass and mirror surfaces
Weekly:
- Deep clean of kitchen including inside microwave, kettle descale, refrigerator shelf wipe
- Clean light switches and power point surrounds
- Disinfect lift interior surfaces (for multi-floor tenancies)
As needed:
- Increased frequency if a staff member tests positive for influenza
- Deep disinfection of any area where a symptomatic person spent extended time
For facilities near Parramatta or across the Hills District, Mercy Property Care's cleaning services in Western Sydney can accommodate after-hours scheduling so disinfection happens before your team arrives each morning.
Why NDIS facilities need a different conversation about infection control cleaning
For NDIS participants, infection risk is not an inconvenience — it is a clinical concern. Many participants live with conditions that make respiratory infections significantly more dangerous than they would be for a healthy working adult.
An NDIS provider operating from an office or shared facility space has obligations that go beyond standard commercial cleaning:
The NDIS Practice Standards Infection Prevention and Control module requires:
- A documented infection control policy that is implemented and reviewed
- Staff trained in infection control procedures
- Environmental cleaning protocols that reflect the nature of services being delivered
- Evidence that cleaning is being carried out — service records, not verbal confirmation
What this looks like in a cleaning context:
- Products used must be appropriate for the facility type and participant population
- Cleaning must occur at a documented frequency
- Written records must be kept and be available for NDIS Quality & Safeguards Commission auditors
- Any outbreak response (increased cleaning frequency, specific room isolation protocols) must be documented
The current flu season adds urgency to this. If an NDIS participant attends your facility and contracts influenza that can be traced to inadequate infection control in your environment, the compliance consequences extend well beyond a failed audit.
Mercy Property Care is a registered NDIS provider offering NDIS cleaning services in Sydney that include documented service records, TGA-registered product use, and scheduling flexibility to meet NDIS compliance requirements.
How does office infection control cleaning differ from standard commercial cleaning?
Most business owners and facility managers assume their current commercial cleaner is handling infection control. In most cases, they are not — and the difference is not always visible.
Standard commercial cleaning includes:
- Floor vacuuming and mopping
- Bin emptying and liner replacement
- General surface wipe-down with a multipurpose spray
- Bathroom cleaning (toilet, basin, mirror)
- Glass cleaning
Infection control cleaning adds:
- TGA-registered disinfectants with confirmed kill claims for influenza A and B
- Documented dwell times — the product must sit on the surface for the prescribed time to be effective; wiping immediately defeats the purpose
- Colour-coded equipment to prevent cross-contamination between zones (bathroom equipment never used in kitchen or workstation areas)
- Written service records that identify what was cleaned, with which product, on which date
- Staff trained in outbreak-response protocols and correct PPE use
The most common gap: a cleaner who sprays and immediately wipes is not performing disinfection. The product must dwell. This is the step that most commercial cleaning services skip, not from negligence but because most clients have never specified it in the contract scope.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is my current office cleaner providing infection control, or just cleaning? A: In most cases, unless your contract specifically mentions TGA-registered disinfectants, documented dwell times, and written service records, you are receiving standard commercial cleaning — not infection control. During active flu season, this is a meaningful difference. Ask your current provider to share the product names and ARTG registration numbers for the disinfectants they use on high-touch surfaces. If they cannot answer quickly, the answer is probably no.
Q: How often should we be disinfecting high-touch surfaces during the current flu season? A: Daily — at minimum before staff arrive each morning, or after the last staff member leaves each evening. High-traffic offices with client-facing reception areas should consider a midday wipe-down of reception counters, EFTPOS terminals, and waiting room surfaces as well. The current NSW flu season is at the highest activity level in the NSW Health classification system, which warrants daily surface disinfection as a baseline, not an optional add-on.
Q: We're an NDIS registered provider. What cleaning records do we need to keep? A: The NDIS Quality & Safeguards Commission requires that your infection control procedures are documented and evidenced. This includes a written cleaning schedule, records showing when cleaning was performed, and evidence that the products used are appropriate for your facility and participant population. In practice, this means your cleaner should be providing signed service records after every visit that identify the areas cleaned, the products used, and the date and time. Mercy Property Care provides this documentation as standard.
Q: My office had a staff member test positive for flu this week. What should we do? A: Arrange a deep disinfection clean of the areas where that person worked — their workstation, any meeting rooms they used, kitchen and bathroom areas — using a TGA-registered disinfectant with a confirmed influenza kill claim. This should happen before other staff return to those areas, ideally that evening or early the following morning. Increase your general disinfection frequency for the following week and monitor for further cases. Call Mercy Property Care on 1300 973 856 for same-week availability.
Q: Does Mercy Property Care use TGA-registered disinfectants? A: Yes. Mercy Property Care uses TGA-registered products with confirmed kill claims for influenza A, influenza B, and other common respiratory pathogens on all high-touch surfaces. We can provide product names and ARTG numbers on request and include documentation of products used in our post-service records. This is particularly important for medical, allied health, and NDIS environments where product compliance is an auditable requirement.
What to do right now if your Sydney office is not infection-control ready
If you are reading this in August 2026 and your current cleaning contract does not include documented disinfection protocols, you have a gap — and the current flu season is exactly when that gap becomes a problem.
The good news is that adjusting this does not require replacing your entire cleaning arrangement. It requires specifying a scope that includes the right products, the right surfaces, the right frequency, and written records. Mercy Property Care can audit your current setup and provide a written infection control cleaning scope within 48 hours.
We service offices, medical centres, allied health practices, and NDIS provider environments across Western Sydney — Parramatta, Blacktown, Penrith, Toongabbie, the Hills District, and Liverpool — with after-hours scheduling and same-week start dates.
