Yes. A sound Colorbond roof in Ipswich, Toowoomba, Hatton Vale or the Lockyer Valley can be painted if you match primer to condition, then apply two coats of a roof membrane. Metal Primer Plus is for faded, rust-free sheets. Rust Inhibitor Primer is for rust at screws and edges. Roof Protect is sold in 15-year and 20-year tiers. Overpainting voids BlueScope’s factory paint warranty.
You can paint a Colorbond roof in Queensland when the steel is still sound. Choose the product from roof material, condition, primer need, colour and heat load, and whether you want 10-year, 15-year or 20-year protection. Skip primer or paint over flaking coating and the film fails in the first wet season. The Thinking Paint Roof Protection Method is the order used below: surface, condition, primer, lifespan, climate, then application.
What roof paint should I use on Colorbond in Queensland?
Use a flexible acrylic roof membrane over a metal primer, not wall paint and not a hardware “paint and primer in one.”
Colorbond is smooth coil-coated steel. It does not give a topcoat much grip. In Ipswich and Toowoomba heat the sheet expands every day, so the coating must flex.
Specify:
- Metal Primer Plus on faded, chalked, rust-free Colorbond and Klip-Lok
- Rust Inhibitor Primer on rust at screws, cut edges and laps
- 15-Year Roof Protect as the standard membrane (about 6 m² per litre, 15 L drums, two coats)
- 20-Year Roof Protect only when the extra coat build is confirmed for that metal roof
- Thermal HRC when heat reduction is part of the brief (15-year Roof Protect line)
Roof Refresh is a 10-year recoat for a sound existing restoration film. It is not the first product on bare, oxidised factory Colorbond.
Does painting Colorbond void the BlueScope warranty?
Yes. BlueScope states that overpainting COLORBOND, ZINCALUME or zinc-coated steel voids warranties it has issued. Post-applied paint systems also invalidate the factory paint warranty.
That does not mean you cannot paint. It means you trade the factory finish warranty for a coating-system warranty.
On a 15- to 25-year-old faded roof in the Lockyer Valley, the BlueScope paint cover may already be gone or no longer the reason you are calling. The warranty you then rely on is Thinking Paint’s Roof Protect product warranty, not a new steel warranty. It covers specified coating defects when the system is applied as written. It does not pay for a re-sheet after storms, ponding, neglect or paint applied over a failed old coating.
How do I know if I need Metal Primer Plus or rust inhibitor?
Use condition, not the colour name on the sheet.
- Faded, chalky, no red rust: Metal Primer Plus (about 9 m² per litre, 15 L drums)
- Rust at fasteners, laps or cut edges: Rust Inhibitor Primer on those areas first
- Soft steel, holes or widespread red rust through the sheet: do not paint — replace
- Loose or flaking old restoration paint: remove it. New membrane stuck to failing paint fails with it
A Queensland Colorbond roof that only looks tired is usually a primer-and-membrane job. A roof that is rusting through is not.
How should Colorbond roof paint be applied so the film lasts?
Apply in this order: inspect, wash, repair, prime, two measured topcoats.
- Inspect chalk, rust, screws, laps and ponding. A dry hand that comes away white means oxidation must be washed off.
- High-pressure wash. Let the sheet dry fully. Moisture under primer blisters in Hatton Vale heat.
- Replace perished screws. Treat rust. Keep copper and lead off the steel.
- Prime with Metal Primer Plus on sound metal. Spot-treat rust with inhibitor.
- Apply two coats of Roof Protect or Thermal HRC by airless spray at about 6 m² per litre per coat. Related Thinking Paint notes put restoration wet-film thickness in the 200–350 micron per coat range depending on product. Check thickness on the first bay.
- Work ridge to gutter while you can keep a wet edge. Stop when the sheet is too hot to hold a hand on, when air is well above 30°C, or when rain is close. Spring mornings in Ipswich and Toowoomba are the working window.
Two thin coats that flash-dry in January heat are not a 15-year membrane.
How much paint do I need for a 200 m² Colorbond roof?
Product only, not labour:
| Layer | Coverage | Litres | 15 L drums |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal Primer Plus | 9 m²/L × 1 coat | ~22 L | 2 |
| Roof Protect or Thermal HRC | 6 m²/L × 2 coats | ~67 L | 5 |
15-Year Roof Protect is listed at $142 per 15 L drum. 20-Year Roof Protect is listed at $172 per 15 L drum. Five membrane drums are about $710 or $860 before primer, freight and labour.
Put DIY product for a 200 m² home at $600–$1,800 and professional application at $2,500–$6,500. Measure the roof, not the floor area. Use the coverage calculator, then confirm litres for pitch and rib profile.
How does Roof Protect compare with Bunnings or Dulux roof paint?
A single hardware tin is a colour coat. Roof Protect is a primer-plus-membrane system with a written product warranty when applied to spec.
| Option | Primer | Stated system warranty | Use on faded Colorbond |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware exterior / generic “roof paint” | Often none, or a generic metal primer | Usually none as a roof system | Only if an existing film is sound and you want colour |
| Dulux Acratex-type roofing system | Specified in that system | Manufacturer system warranty if applied to spec | A real system alternative, still needs metal-correct primer and film build |
| Roof Refresh | Not a full metal rebuild | 10 years on a sound existing film | Recoat, not first coat on oxidised factory Colorbond |
| 15-Year Roof Protect | Metal Primer Plus or rust inhibitor | 15-year product warranty if professionally applied to spec | Standard restoration spec |
| 20-Year Roof Protect | Primer plus extra build as specified | 20-year product warranty if applied to spec | Confirm the metal path before you order this tier |
| Thermal HRC | Metal Primer Plus on metal | 15-year Roof Protect line | Same weather job when heat is the brief. White Thermal HRC is published at SRI 110.5 |
The price gap is primer match, two coats at membrane thickness, and who stands behind the film. A wall colour poured onto a roof in Toowoomba is not that system.
Does heat-reflective paint change the spec on Colorbond?
Yes, if cooler rooms are why you are painting.
Thermal HRC is specified after Metal Primer Plus, in two coats, same 6 m² per litre coverage. Published figures for the white finish include SRI 110.5, high solar reflectance, and a large drop in peak sheet temperature versus untreated dark metal. Light tints do that work. A dark Monument match will still look like a dark roof in Queensland summer.
Do not paint dark now and “add reflective later.” Choose Thermal HRC and the tint in the same job.
How does the Thinking Paint Roof Protection Method work?
The Thinking Paint Roof Protection Method is a six-point product choice, not a slogan.
- Surface type — Colorbond, Zincalume, tile, terracotta or fibro
- Condition — chalked, rusted, previously restoration-painted, or failed
- Primer and sealer — Metal Primer Plus, rust inhibitor, Oz Primer or Platinum Primer as the surface requires
- Lifespan — 10-year Refresh, 15-year Roof Protect, or 20-year Roof Protect
- Colour, heat and Queensland climate — including Thermal HRC where heat load matters
- Application and scale — DIY supply versus accredited application, which is required to qualify the Roof Protect product warranty
Thinking Paint has supplied homeowners, tradies, restorers and property owners for 20 years from Hatton Vale, with 3-business-day delivery to Ipswich and Toowoomba. The method is the same on a single dwelling or a commercial metal roof: do not pick a colour before you pick a primer.
Can I paint Colorbond myself or do I need a professional?
You can buy the drums and apply them. The published Roof Protect product warranty requires application by a certified professional following manufacturer guidelines.
DIY is a supply path. It is not automatically a warranted install. Previously restoration-painted roofs can also fall outside product warranty where the new film would bond to old paint rather than prepared steel.
If you want the 15-year or 20-year figure on paper, budget for an accredited applicator in the Ipswich–Toowoomba catchment and keep proof of purchase and prep.
