Every homeowner with a street-facing window knows the standoff. Close the blinds for privacy and your living room turns into a cave. Leave them open and you are waving at the mail carrier in your pajamas. Top down bottom up shades settle the argument, because you can lower the shade from the top edge to let daylight pour in while the bottom half stays covered. From a Covington bay window to a Union kitchen, it is one of the simplest upgrades a home can make.
Key Insights
- Top down bottom up shades open from either end, so you control privacy and daylight separately.
- Honeycomb (cellular) fabric adds a layer of insulation at the glass, which helps with Kentucky's cold snaps and hot afternoons.
- Cordless lifts remove dangling cords, which suits homes with kids and pets.
- Custom measuring matters most on bay, arched and older windows, and a free in-home consultation gets it right the first time.
What Are Top Down Bottom Up Shades?
Answer capsule: Top down bottom up shades are window shades that can be lowered from the top, raised from the bottom, or both. That lets sunlight enter at the upper part of the window while the lower part stays covered for privacy.
Standard shades pull down from the head rail and that is the end of the story. These have a second rail that moves independently. Slide the top rail down a foot or two and you have daylight without an audience. Raise the bottom rail for a classic look. Most homeowners end up using them in a middle position for much of the day.
One honest note. If you open the top at night with the lights on, people outside can see the upper part of your room. Most families use the top opening during the day and close the shade fully after dark.
Where They Work Best in Boone County Homes
Street-facing living rooms in Florence and Union
Newer neighborhoods often have big windows close to the sidewalk. Lowering the top rail keeps the room bright and the sofa out of view.
Kitchens and other window treatments for kitchen sinks
The window over the sink is a favorite spot. You want light while you wash dishes, and you probably do not want a full view of the counter from the driveway. Moisture-friendly fabrics and easy-clean materials make sense here, and a top-down setting handles glare without blocking the yard.
Bay windows in Covington and Erlanger
Older homes in Covington, Erlanger and Fort Mitchell often have bay windows with several angled panels. Each panel can carry its own shade, so you can set the height for each one. That flexibility is hard to get with a single off-the-shelf panel.
Why Honeycomb Shades Suit Kentucky Weather
Answer capsule: Honeycomb shades have cells that trap air between the room and the glass. That extra layer slows heat moving through the window, which helps in winter and cuts glare and warmth from summer sun.
Glass is one of the weakest points in any wall. In January it pulls warmth out of a room, and in July it lets afternoon sun in. Honeycomb shades put a soft barrier in front of the glass. They are not a substitute for fixing a leaky window seal, and it is fair to say so. A drafty frame needs caulk or a repair, not fabric. But a good cellular shade on a decent window makes a room feel more comfortable and can help your heating and cooling work less hard. Ask your consultant about light-filtering versus room-darkening fabrics, since bedrooms and living rooms usually want different things.
Cordless Blinds and Shades for Busy Households
Answer capsule: Cordless blinds and shades use a simple push or pull on the rail, with no hanging cords. They are a popular choice for homes with young children and pets.
Loose cords are a real concern in family homes. Cordless lifts look cleaner too, since nothing dangles beside the window. If you like the idea of tapping a button or using your voice, ask about cordless motorized blinds and how they connect to your existing smart home setup. Motorized products can carry different warranty terms, so your consultant will walk through what applies before you order.
Measuring Tips That Save Headaches
Custom sizing is where a professional earns the fee. Here are the basics, plus the traps.
- Measure width in three places (top, middle and bottom) for an inside mount, and use the smallest number. Windows are rarely perfectly square, especially in older Kenton County homes.
- Measure height on the left, center and right. Take the longest measurement for an inside mount unless you are told otherwise.
- Check the depth of the frame. Some inside mounts need more depth than a thin frame allows.
- Arched and angled windows often need a different product or a mounting trick. A shade that looks perfect in a store can bind on an odd-shaped window.
A big-box shade often comes in standard widths, so you trim or settle. Custom shades are built to your measurements, which is the difference you notice every single day when the shade hangs straight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do top down bottom up shades really save energy?
Cellular versions add an insulating layer at the window, which can reduce heat moving through the glass. Results depend on your windows, sun exposure and how you use the shade, so expect comfort gains rather than a guaranteed bill drop.
What does the No-Questions-Asked warranty cover?
Most qualifying products include a one-time repair or replacement within five years of purchase if the product is damaged after installation. It covers the original purchaser and original product only, a minimal trip charge may apply, and exceptions apply for some manufacturers and for motorized, automated and exterior products. Your consultant will confirm what applies to your order.
Are custom shades better than off-the-shelf blinds?
Custom shades are built to your exact window size and mounting style, so they fit odd-shaped and older windows better. Off-the-shelf options come in standard sizes, which often means trimming or accepting gaps.
