If you have scrolled through TikTok lately, you have probably seen them: bright, perfectly even smiles that appeared after a week abroad. "Turkey teeth" has become one of the most talked about dental trends online, and Australian dentists are being asked about it in the chair every week. If you are wondering whether a fast smile makeover overseas could be right for you, it helps to understand what actually happens to your teeth first.
Key Insights
- "Turkey teeth" usually means a full set of veneers or crowns placed during a short trip overseas, often over just a few days.
- The biggest concern dentists raise is how much healthy tooth is removed, and whether you can get proper follow-up care once you are back home.
- The Australian Dental Association has said dentists are seeing more complications from overseas work, often years after the treatment.
- A gentler approach that protects your natural tooth is available on the Sunshine Coast, with sedation options for people who feel anxious about dental visits.
What Do People Mean by Turkey Teeth?
Turkey teeth is the popular name for a set of veneers or crowns placed abroad, usually in a few days, and made famous on social media.
The phrase started with people travelling to Turkey for cosmetic dentistry, but the idea now covers dental tourism to many countries. Plenty of overseas dentists are well trained and careful. It is the speed of the trend that deserves a closer look, because big decisions about your teeth deserve time and thought.
Why the Turkey Teeth Trend Went Viral
It is easy to see the appeal. The videos look dramatic, the treatment comes with a holiday, and dental costs at home can feel out of reach. One review of viral dental content published in September 2026 counted more than 43 million combined views across just ten risky TikTok dental trends, with Turkey teeth among the most watched.
The Australian Dental Association made a similar point in July 2026. Its president said dentists are seeing more people, often older patients, with complications from work done overseas, and that people rarely factor in the cost of maintaining complex dental work over the years.
Veneers vs Crowns, and Why the Difference Matters
A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth and usually needs little enamel removed, while a crown covers the whole tooth and needs much more of it reshaped.
This is the heart of most turkey teeth problems. Veneers can be a conservative way to change the shape or colour of teeth that are otherwise healthy. Crowns are the right choice for teeth that are badly broken or heavily filled. When crowns are placed on teeth that could have had veneers, a healthy tooth may be shaved down to a small peg. Enamel does not grow back, and once it is gone, the tooth relies on the restoration for the rest of its life.
What can go wrong later
When a lot of tooth is removed, the nerve inside can become irritated. Some teeth then need root canal treatment. Other issues dentists commonly see include:
- ongoing sensitivity to hot and cold
- inflamed or receding gums around the edges of the restoration
- a bite that feels uneven, which can strain the jaw
- restorations that need replacing sooner than expected
Every veneer and crown will need replacing eventually. The question is how much natural tooth you have left when that day comes.
The Follow-Up Question Most People Forget
Veneers and crowns need regular check-ups and occasional adjustments, so ask who will look after you once you are home.
Your gums settle, your bite changes slightly, and small problems are far easier to fix early. The Australian Dental Association has said that complex treatment is best not squeezed into a holiday, because there is often no easy way to return if something needs attention.
A Gentler Approach Closer to Home
Some smile goals can be reached while keeping much more of your own tooth. This is the thinking behind biomimetic dentistry, which aims to repair teeth in a way that respects their natural structure. At Oris Dental in Parrearra, Dr Ketan Patel focuses on biomimetic and cosmetic dentistry and uses digital scanning to plan treatment carefully. Our porcelain and composite veneers are always planned after an examination, and not every patient is suited to every option. Sometimes the kindest advice is that you need less treatment than you thought.
If Fear of the Dentist Is Part of the Picture
For some people, a fast overseas package is tempting because many long appointments feel overwhelming. That is completely understandable. Dr Prachi Pisharodi at Oris Dental is an AHPRA-endorsed dental sedation practitioner. Depending on your health and the treatment planned, options such as sleep dentistry and twilight sedation may help you feel relaxed through longer visits. We will talk through your medical history and what suits you before anything is decided.
Questions to Ask Any Dentist Before Cosmetic Treatment
Whether you are in Kawana Waters, Caloundra, Maroochydore or anywhere else on the coast, these questions are worth asking wherever you choose to be treated:
- Why do you recommend veneers or crowns for my teeth?
- How much of my natural tooth will be removed?
- Are there less invasive options I should consider?
- Is my dentist registered? You can check the public register on the AHPRA website.
- Who will provide follow-up care, and what happens if something goes wrong?
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Turkey teeth safe?
Not automatically safe or unsafe. The outcome depends on the dentist, the diagnosis, and how much tooth is removed. Treatment that is rushed, or that removes healthy tooth without a clear reason, carries a higher risk of long-term problems. The safest step is to get an independent examination and a clear treatment plan before you commit to anything.
Can Turkey teeth be fixed if something goes wrong?
Many problems can be assessed and managed, but the right fix depends on what was done. Your dentist will usually need an examination and X-rays first. Some teeth may need root canal treatment or new restorations. If you are worried about work you already have, our second opinion service is a good place to start.
Do veneers always mean shaving down my teeth?
No. Some veneers need very little enamel removed, and some cases need none at all. Others, such as teeth that are badly worn or broken, may need crowns instead. Only an examination can tell which is right for you.
Can I have cosmetic dental work if I am scared of the dentist?
Yes. Sedation options can help many nervous patients feel calm during treatment. Suitability depends on your health, so your dentist will review your medical history first.
