For many people with disability, an Australian Disability Enterprise offers something that can be genuinely difficult to find elsewhere: real, paid, meaningful work in a supported environment that adapts to individual needs rather than expecting people to adapt to a one-size-fits-all workplace.
But what exactly is an Australian Disability Enterprise, how does it operate, and who is it designed for? This guide explains how Thorndale Industries , the ADE operated by Thorndale Foundation , provides supported employment across Western Sydney.
What Is an Australian Disability Enterprise?
An Australian Disability Enterprise (ADE) is a business that provides supported employment opportunities for people with disability who require additional workplace assistance.
Unlike traditional workplaces where employees are usually expected to manage tasks independently, ADEs provide structured support to help employees participate successfully at work.
ADEs operate as genuine businesses, delivering products and services while creating inclusive employment opportunities for people with disability.
The purpose of an ADE is not only to provide employment. It is about creating an environment where people with disability can develop skills, contribute to a team, and experience the benefits of meaningful work.
For organisations like Thorndale Foundation, an ADE provides a pathway for participants to engage in employment while receiving the right level of support based on their individual needs and goals.
How Does an Australian Disability Enterprise Work?
Each Australian Disability Enterprise functions like a standard business in most respects. It competes for contracts, delivers services to clients, manages workflows, and maintains quality standards. What makes an Australian Disability Enterprise different is the support infrastructure built around each employee.
At Thorndale Industries, our Australian Disability Enterprise model is built on a person-centred approach. That means:
- Each participant is matched to tasks that align with their strengths, abilities, stamina, and communication style
- One-on-one or small-group supervision is provided throughout the working day
- Tasks are broken down clearly and modified where needed
- A predictable routine is maintained to promote comfort, confidence, and skill development
- All work takes place in a safe, regulated workplace that meets Australian employment standards
Every employee in an Australian Disability Enterprise is protected by the same workplace rights as any other worker, including occupational health and safety standards, appropriate supervision, and a structured process for reviewing their work arrangements regularly.
How Are Wages Calculated in an Australian Disability Enterprise?
Wages for employees in an Australian Disability Enterprise are set under the Supported Employment Services Award, administered by the Fair Work Commission.
This award includes a wage assessment process that determines pay based on each individual's productivity and support requirements.
Thorndale Foundation is committed to transparent, fair, and lawful wage assessments for all participants at Thorndale Industries. Every participant receives regular wage reviews, and the process is explained clearly so participants and their families understand exactly how wages are determined.
Who Is Eligible to Work in an Australian Disability Enterprise?
Australian Disability Enterprises are designed for adults with disability who need substantial ongoing support to participate in employment.
Participants can explore supported employment services with guidance from their support network or NDIS support coordinator.
Eligibility for Australian Disability Enterprise supported employment typically applies to people who:
- Have a disability that affects their capacity to work in open employment without significant support
- Are 18 years of age or older
- Have an NDIS plan that includes funding for supported employment
- May also be receiving the Disability Support Pension (DSP)
If you are unsure whether a person is eligible for Australian Disability Enterprise supported employment, speaking with an NDIS support coordinator is the recommended first step.
What Types of Work Does Thorndale's Australian Disability Enterprise Offer?
Thorndale Industries operates two main supported employment streams as part of its Australian Disability Enterprise model:
- Packaging and Assembly Services include labelling, collating, packaging, mailouts, assembly, rework, shrink-wrapping, and general packing.
- Lawn and Garden Maintenance Services provide participants with opportunities to work in community environments across Western Sydney.
- Storage and Warehousing Services provide businesses with reliable support for storage, handling, and warehouse-related tasks.
