Finding wheels that look right on your truck is easy. Finding wheels that actually fit correctly takes a little more work.
A wheel's diameter is only one part of the equation. Bolt pattern, width, offset, backspacing, and center bore all influence whether a wheel can be mounted correctly and whether it has adequate clearance around the suspension, brakes, bodywork, and tires.
The right wheel for your truck needs the correct bolt pattern and appropriate center bore, while its diameter, width, offset, and backspacing must provide adequate clearance for your specific vehicle and tire setup.
That's why two wheels that are both advertised as 20-inch truck wheels aren't necessarily interchangeable.
TL;DR: How Do I Know What Wheels Fit My Truck?
Before buying aftermarket wheels for a truck, check these six specifications:
1. Wheel diameter
2. Wheel width
3. Bolt pattern
4. Offset
5. Backspacing
6. Center bore
Bolt pattern is fundamental because the wheel must match the vehicle's mounting configuration. Center bore and wheel hardware also need to be compatible, while width, offset, and backspacing influence where the wheel sits relative to the suspension and fender.
HPD Wheels provides an Install Hardware Fitment Guide that can help identify specifications including thread pitch and vehicle center bore before ordering wheels or installation hardware.

Why Wheel Diameter Alone Doesn't Tell You If a Wheel Fits
A common mistake is shopping by diameter alone.
For example, seeing that your truck currently has 18-inch wheels doesn't mean every aftermarket 18-inch wheel will fit.
Two 18-inch wheels can have different widths, bolt patterns, offsets, backspacing, center bores, and brake clearances.
That means wheel fitment should be treated as a combination of measurements rather than a single number.
1. Start With the Correct Bolt Pattern
What Is a Wheel Bolt Pattern?
Bolt pattern, sometimes called PCD or pitch circle diameter, describes the number of mounting holes and the diameter of the circle those holes form.
You'll commonly see specifications written in formats such as 5x127 or 6x139.7.
The first number tells you how many mounting points the wheel has. The second describes the diameter of the bolt circle in millimeters.
Why Bolt Pattern Matters
A wheel must have a mounting pattern compatible with the vehicle.
HPD's HD Off-Road Wheels collection includes wheels across different bolt-pattern configurations, which is why shoppers should narrow their search using vehicle specifications rather than choosing solely by design.
2. Check Wheel Diameter
Wheel diameter is the measurement most drivers already recognize.
Common aftermarket truck wheel diameters include sizes such as 17, 18, 20, and 22 inches, although availability and suitability depend on the vehicle.
HPD's current HD Off-Road Wheels range includes multiple wheel sizes for truck and off-road applications.
But bigger isn't automatically better.
Changing diameter can affect tire selection, sidewall height, brake clearance, and the overall tire diameter you need to maintain.
3. Don't Ignore Wheel Width
Diameter tells you how tall the wheel is. Width tells you how wide it is.
You'll typically see the two combined. For example, 20x9 means a nominal 20-inch diameter and 9-inch width.
Width matters because it affects tire compatibility and the amount of space the wheel occupies inside and outside the wheel well.
A wider wheel combined with a substantial offset change can move the wheel considerably farther outward or inward than the factory setup.
4. Understand Wheel Offset
Offset describes the relationship between the wheel's centerline and mounting surface.
• Positive Offset: The mounting surface sits toward the outside face of the wheel.
• Zero Offset: The mounting surface sits approximately at the wheel's centerline.
• Negative Offset: The mounting surface sits inward from the centerline, generally positioning more of the wheel outward.
HPD's off-road range includes multiple offset specifications, and individual wheels can be offered in several combinations of width, bolt pattern, and offset.
For a deeper explanation of aggressive negative offsets, HPD's existing content on negative offset wheels can support this topic without repeating the same search intent here.
5. Check Backspacing Too
Offset and backspacing both describe wheel positioning, but they use different measurements.
Offset is measured from the wheel centerline to the mounting surface. Backspacing measures the distance from the mounting surface toward the wheel's inner edge.
Backspacing is especially useful when thinking about inner clearance.
Too much inward positioning can create clearance issues around suspension components. Moving the wheel farther outward can introduce different clearance considerations around the fender and bodywork.
HPD product pages display fitment specifications such as wheel size, bolt pattern, offset, backspacing, and center bore where applicable.
6. Verify the Center Bore
The center bore is the opening in the center of the wheel.
It needs to provide appropriate clearance for the vehicle's hub.
HPD'sInstall Hardware FitmentGuide identifies vehicle hub bore specifications and provides information that can help shoppers select appropriate installation hardware.
This is a detail that's easy to overlook when shopping primarily by wheel style.
What About Lug Nuts and Lug Bolts?
Correct wheel hardware matters too.
Not every vehicle uses the same thread size, seat style, or even the same type of fastener. Some vehicles use lug nuts, while others use lug bolts.
HPD's fitment resources provide thread-pitch information and guidance for choosing appropriate installation hardware.
Don't assume the hardware from one wheel or vehicle will automatically suit another setup.
Wheel Fitment vs Tire Fitment
These are related, but they aren't the same thing.
Wheel fitment asks whether the wheel itself is compatible with the vehicle. Tire fitment asks whether the chosen tire works appropriately with the wheel and vehicle.
A wheel may technically mount to the hub while the complete wheel-and-tire combination still creates clearance problems.
That's why the full setup matters. When moving to wider wheels, larger tires, or a more aggressive stance, consider:
• Suspension clearance
• Brake clearance
• Fender clearance
• Tire width
• Tire diameter
• Steering clearance at full lock
• Suspension travel
Stock Truck vs Lifted Truck: Does Fitment Change?
Potentially.
A lifted or otherwise modified truck can have different clearance considerations from an entirely stock vehicle.
But a lift doesn't mean that every larger or more aggressive wheel-and-tire combination will automatically fit.
Suspension design, lift type, wheel width, offset, tire dimensions, and body clearance all still matter.
If your truck has been modified, base your wheel choice on its current configuration, not simply the original factory specifications.
How Far Can You Deviate From Factory Wheel Specs?
There isn't one universal number that works for every truck.
A small change in wheel width or offset may work on one platform and create interference on another.
The more substantially you change width, offset, tire dimensions, or suspension height, the more important it becomes to verify the entire combination before ordering.
How to Check Wheel Fitment Before Ordering
Use this process before buying:
1. Identify Your Vehicle: Record the year, make, model, and relevant trim or drivetrain configuration.
2. Find the Factory Specifications: Check the original wheel dimensions, bolt pattern, center bore, and hardware specifications.
3. Compare the New Wheel: Compare diameter, width, bolt pattern, offset, backspacing, and center bore.
4. Account for Your Tires: Check that the intended tire is suitable for the new wheel width and that the overall combination has adequate clearance.
5. Account for Modifications: Include lifts, suspension changes, brake upgrades, or other modifications that could affect clearance.
6. Verify Before Ordering: Use HPD Wheels' Install Hardware Fitment Guide and other vehicle fitment resources to verify specifications before ordering. If you're unsure about a particular setup, confirm the complete wheel, tire, and vehicle combination before purchase.
Can You Use Another Truck's Wheel Setup as a Reference?
Yes, but treat it as a reference rather than proof that the same setup will fit your truck.
Vehicle galleries are useful because they show how particular wheels look on actual vehicles.
HPD'sHD Off-Road Vehicle Gallery features wheelsetups on a variety of trucks and SUVs, giving shoppers a useful visual reference when comparing styles and fitments.
However, two trucks that look similar can have different model years, suspension modifications, or tire sizes.
Always verify your own specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know what wheels fit my truck?
Start with the vehicle's year, make, and model, then verify bolt pattern, center bore, wheel diameter, width, offset, and backspacing. Tire size and any suspension or brake modifications also need to be considered.
Does the bolt pattern have to match?
The wheel needs a mounting configuration compatible with the vehicle. Don't purchase a wheel based only on diameter or appearance.
Will any 20-inch wheel fit a truck with factory 20-inch wheels?
No. Two 20-inch wheels can have different widths, bolt patterns, offsets, backspacing, and center bores.
What's the difference between wheel offset and backspacing?
Offset measures the mounting surface relative to the wheel centerline. Backspacing measures from the mounting surface toward the wheel's inner edge. Both help describe where the wheel sits relative to the vehicle.
Can I put wider wheels on my truck?
Potentially, but wider wheels change the space occupied by the wheel-and-tire assembly. Offset, tire size, suspension clearance, and fender clearance all need to be checked.
Do lifted trucks need different wheel fitment?
A lift can change available clearance, but it doesn't remove other fitment requirements. Bolt pattern, center bore, wheel dimensions, offset, tires, and the specific suspension setup still need to be considered.
Where can I check HPD wheel fitment?
HPD Wheels provides an InstallHardware Fitment Guide and vehicle fitment resources through its website, alongside individual product specifications and vehicle galleries.
